My Work Expetience
On February 4th, every student in year 10 started work experience. I'm pretty sure everyone was very nervous!
In my work experience I worked at my old preschool , St Luke's. In fact I used to go there when I was a child and some of the same staff still worked there and remembered me. I wasn't as nervous as I thought I would be on my first day, which was a good thing. (The children were 2 - 4 years old.) I actually really enjoyed myself there, it was nice to be in a different surrounding other then school and it was fun working with kids. Getting to help them make things, and read stories, it's something I have never done before. I am the youngest in all of my family so I have never had much of experience working with children. On my first day, the children were talking to me, wanting to hold my hand and sit on my lap, i found it very sweet but also tiring.

I definitely enjoyed work experience more then school, but thinking about it, I wouldn't be able to go in everyday full of energy to work at a place like a preschool. Just having to be happy all of the time so that you don't upset or confuse the children and making sure no matter how tired you feel that you are making sure the children are safe and having the energy to play games with them etc.
Details Clothes: I got to wear whatever I wanted, as long as it was casual and comfortable. lunch time: 12:15 - 1:15 My work times: Monday and Friday: 9am - 12:15pm. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 9am - 2:30pm. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I was really happy about my times, it wasn't a long day and I didn't have to get up really early! |
ADVANTAGES
-It was an easy job.
-It was fun to work with kids. -The staff were really nice. -The activities i had to do weren't too confusing or difficult. (I didn't have to keep asking for help) I didn't do a lot, mainly because there wasn't a lot to do. Because I don't take Health and social care for a GCSE, I didn't have any set tasks to do from the school. I did get given some jobs, like helping kids make lanterns for Chinese new year, my job was to be in control of it and help and be able to explain to the children what to do, (with a staff member watching over me). This was really fun and creative, in fact being there made me want to paint and draw more. I also got given jobs like monitoring a certain activity, or monitoring the snack time or laminating fake money for the children to role play with etc.
But a lot of my time there was just spent with reading A LOT of story books to the children and playing with them. The first week I definitely did what the kids wanted me to do, but the second week I remembered I was the adult and I didn't need/have to do everything they asked me too. Because on the first week my throat dried up a lot because I was constantly reading stories to them (which is very tiring after a while). |
DISADVANTAGES
-Couldn't work with too many children at one time.
-Struggled to actually get the children to do what they were told. -It was tiring, so when i got home i just wanted to fall to sleep. -There wasn't many jobs to do, which made it a bit boring at times. -Couldn't take any pictures. Photographing and overall experienceI didn't get the chance to take any pictures of what the building looked like as I wasn't aloud to use my phone or any other camera device because of the children.
On the left is a picture of the preschool, it isn't my photography, but it gives an idea of what it looked like on the outside. As I said, I couldn't take any pictures as it wasn't aloud at all! The staff that worked there were really nice and supportive, which made everything a lot nicer and easier. They were really patient and didn't ask me to do job after job after job. They were just really friendly. Because I live so close to the preschool I could just go home for lunch, and it wasn't a long walk about 10 minutes at the most. I'm really happy that this was my work experience because I really enjoyed my time there, and I know that a lot of people who worked in offices etc found it really boring. So I am lucky that I found a enjoyable work placement. |
Overall, I really enjoyed my work and I am glad that I got the chance to try it out. It has taught me a bit more of what work is like and given me an idea of what jobs I would prefer more then others.
